As the amount of daylight decreases, sunrises and sunsets paint the sky in breathtaking shades of blue, pink, and yellow. The combination of pure white snow and the dark, star-filled sky creates a magical atmosphere known as kaamos, the polar night—made even more enchanting by the Northern Lights dancing brilliantly across the sky. During winter we enjoy the warmth of Christmas and New Year celebrations, but also the many seasonal activities that make this time of year so special—embracing the serene beauty and stillness of Lapland’s snow-covered wilderness.

Spring time in Lapland

In Lapland, spring is a unique blend of winter’s magic and the first signs of warmer days. The Northern Lights still shine brightly across the clear night sky, even as fresh snow continues to fall. Temperatures gradually rise, creating the best conditions of the entire winter season for outdoor sports—crisp snow, longer days, and perfect light for enjoying nature at its finest.

The crystal-clear natural waters glisten under the endless daylight, and in Rovaniemi, the rivers come alive with boaters, jet skiers, swimmers, and paddleboarders. At the start of summer, adorable reindeer calves are born, giving you the chance to witness one of the sweetest sights in the Arctic wilderness. It’s the perfect season to head outdoors—day or night—and experience the unforgettable beauty of the sun that never sets.

Autumn in Lapland

Autumn in Lapland transforms the entire landscape into a glowing tapestry of golden hues.The breathtaking ruska season reveals just how stunning the change of seasons can be, as forests and fells burst into brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red. Northern lights season starts from August and it's actually better chance to catch them than in early winter!

Nature offers its finest gifts: berries and mushrooms fill the wilderness, waiting for eager foragers. Wild blueberries, cloudberries, and lingonberries grow abundantly and are cherished by locals—making early autumn the perfect time to gather treats for the winter ahead.

As the season deepens, migratory birds take over the waterways around Rovaniemi. Along the Ounasjoki and Kemijoki rivers, you can spot large flocks of swans pausing to rest on their journey south. Autumn in Lapland is a celebration of color, harvest, and the vibrant rhythms of nature.
